When The Rains Come

Illustrating a point

Like many others, Malawi Underprivileged Mothers was born in the maternity ward of an Edinburgh hospital back in 1995. It was here that midwife Linda McDonald first encountered photos and stories from a maternity ward in Malawi – unclean, unsafe conditions in which many mothers and babies perished. Inspired to act, Linda launched MUMs – a charity dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the women and children of Malawi. Since that inception, MUMs has done just that – so far raising over £150,000 for various medical and social projects.

The latest MUMs fundraiser is a children’s book, written by Tom Pow and beautifully brought to life by illustrator Malika Favre. Based on Linda’s photos of life in Malawi, the book presents the truth of Malawi life in way that’s both vibrant and informative; realistic and yet joyful. Combining modern story-telling with traditional folklore, the resulting book is a riot of colour, detail and movement, and sales will make a real, tangible difference to the lives of others. Buy one for anyone you know. Buy one for everyone you know. This is good design in every sense of the word.
