The Light Phone

Call me, maybe

A friend of mine recently went to a secluded B&B. There were lush landscapes, plushy down-filled bedding, homegrown meals made with TLC and, most importantly, there was zero phone reception. “How was it?” I asked her when she got back. She gave the same answer a lot of us would give: peaceful and idyllic to be away from calls and emails and a million gloating status updates by which you’ll inadvertently measure your own achievements.

For those who want to remedy their ever-growing telephonic obsession, phone tech wizard Kaiwei Tang and designer Joe Hollier have envisaged a beautiful, timeless phone with a simple purpose: to be used as little as possible, in conjunction with your existing phone, for when you need a digital detox whilst still being reachable. Like your old Nokia 3300, it has twenty days of battery life. Unlike your glorified pocket Snake console, it’s the size of a credit card, with nary but a numeric keypad to hold your attention. It’s available for pre-order, with the first phones due to hit consumer hands in June 2016.
