For New York design graduate Nicholas Ruiz, a formal dress code required inspiration from the grand master of cubism himself. In 1912 and 1914, Picasso created two guitars from paper, string, wire and sheet metal, and gave them to The Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Fast-forward to 2011 and Ruiz, who works at MoMA, is called upon to smarten up for the opening night of Picasso: Guitars 1912–1914.

In tribute to Picasso’s creations, he fashions his own bow tie from recycled materials – multi-coloured guitar picks, a hanger and super glue. These arty beginnings led to a collection of eleven bow ties, all inspired by exhibitions at the gallery and worn to the relevant opening night.
