WWF Rattan Programme

Feeling vine

Since rattan is experiencing something of a design revival at the moment, it’s handy that the good eggs at WWF have stepped in to ensure it’s got a healthy future. Responding to the fact that standard rattan forestry can damage surrounding vegetation, WWF swiftly set up the Sustainable Rattan Programme in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. With a plan to save the remaining forests of the Mekong region whilst giving a crucial boost to local

economies, the extensive project has seen the creation of seedling nurseries and plantations, as well as giving hands-on, skilled training to local workers. As if that wasn’t enough, WWF has now joined up with a number of Swedish designers to create a range of rattan products that would look good in the most design-particular homes. Viva la rattan revival!
