Belt Bench

Time to buckle down

A bench made of 1000 belts wrapped around metal might not be the comfiest or most practical of designs, but as a piece of art it certainly gets our attention. Comprising belts collected from the good people of Madison, Wisconsin, each individual component lays claim to its own personal story. The Chinese artist behind the piece, Hongtao Zhou, says he wants to see the project – which aims to makes people rethink

over-consumption and our relationship with animals – spread to other parts of the world. With a belt buckle serving as a table at one end (counterbalanced by a bull’s head at the other), the individual curved sections of the bench can be stacked and rearranged as desired. Maybe not so impractical after all.
